The Hairstyling and The Esthetics Program Outline (Syllabus)
The Hairstyling Program is designed for students who enjoy meeting and talking with people and working creatively with their hands. Hairstyling is an art often associated with the world of fashion.
A successful career in Hairstyling requires a creative flair, an artistic imagination, good finger dexterity, a pleasant personality, strong customer service skills, and the ability to
stand for extended periods of time.
The Hairstyling Program is a 1500 hour accredited program which meets apprenticeship training standards. Students must attain a 70% average in both the theory and practical components in all twelve courses in order to enter the apprenticeship
program.
Once all the portions of the course are completed, the student may challenge the government exam. A total of 1500 hours must be completed before application of license, so ATTENDANCE is of the utmost importance.

Introduction to Cosmetology (YCPM-10A)
Prerequisite: None
Description: This course is available to students in grade 9-12.
This course is a one block elective that covers career opportunities,
salon sanitation, shampoo and rinse, braids, updo and hairstyling techniques,
nail care, skin care, make-up application, and introduction to the salon.

Introduction to Esthetics (YCPM-10)
Prerequisite: None
Description: This course is available to students in grade 10-12.
This course covers makeup theory and application, skin care, facials, lash
and brow tinting, brow shaping, manicure procedures and nail art techniques.
Topics covered also include knowledge of color theory, analyzing facial
features, client consultations, salon safety procedures, and product knowledge,
salon management, interpersonal skills, and career preparation (resume writing,
job search, and interview skills)

Intermediate Cosmetology (YCPM-12A)
Prerequisite: Introduction to Cosmetology
Description: This course is available to grade 11 and 12 students.
This course is a double block elective with the option of taking it as a single block.
The course covers the above mentioned topics as well as hair care,
intermediate chemistry, hair removal, hair cutting,
permanent waving, and hair coloring.

Advanced Cosmetology
(In-salon work experience) MWEX-2ACOS
Prerequisite: Intermediate Cosmetology
Description: This course is available to grade 11 and 12 students.
This course is a one block elective incorporating in-salon work experience.
This course will cover advanced styling, cutting, and colouring techniques,
as well as career preparation topics. Students will also be expected
to work 300 hours. in one or more salons to gain the knowledge, skills, and professionalism
needed to be successful in the salon industry. It will enable the students
to move directly into the apprenticeship training system while attending secondary school

Exploration of Hairstyling:
Students will explore
the Hairstyling, Esthetics and Fashion industry.
2 Credits
Grade 10/11 - Beginner Level
Introduction to Hairstyling:
Orientation with trade
tools and learn basic fundamentals.
Basic Hairstyling:
Learning the principles of Hairstyling
through wet setting and formal up do’s.
Basic Haircutting & Thermal Styling:
Students will gain knowledge of four basic
haircutting techniques.
Related Salon Services:
Working on clients and exploring
the components of the curriculum in manicuring,
facials, and make-up.
4 Credits
Grade 11 - Intermediate Level
Intermediate Haircutting Techniques:
Introduction to clipper cutting, razor, taper and design lines.
Hair Coloring: Students will learn the theory and
practical aspects of coloring.
Intermediate Hairstyling and Artificial Hair:
Explore materials and demonstrate skills regarding
wigs, hairpieces, and hair extensions.
Chemical Texture Service:
Students will work on wrapping patterns,
chemical texture waves, chemical
hair straightening and relaxing techniques.
4 Credits
Grade 12 - Advanced Level
Advanced Hairstyling and Coloring:
Continue demonstrating skills in thermal styling, wet setting,
braiding, UPDO’s, hair coloring, highlighting, and
special effects.
Advanced Haircutting and Chemical Texture Service:
Students will learn new trends and take a closer
look at industry.
Salon Operations:
Learning fundamental practices, safety (WHMIS),
and business operations of the salon environment.
Certification Preparation:
This course provides student
with skill preparation for the Government Provincial Exam
theory and Practical exam.
4 Credits
Successful graduates of the program have an opportunity to enter the 2 – year Hairstylist
BC-ITA Apprenticeship Program.
Certificate of Qualification is presented upon successful completion of the apprenticeship and the theory and practical examinations. Many opportunities are available for those wishing to advance in industry such as salon manager, salon owner, research, education and platform work.
